Is It Possible To Create Cool “New Age” Sounds On The Piano Without Knowing A Thing About Music

I’ll admit that for many years as a piano teacher I didn’t think so.

But in the last couple years I made a discovery about creating pleasant sounds on the piano that I never would have believed during my earlier piano teaching career.

I recall a physician friend asking me if I had any kind of course he could take that didn’t involve learning to read music or music theory or any of the traditional materials. He had purchased a beautiful Yamaha grand for his daughter to take lessons on when she was growing up, but now she was married and moved away, so he had this grand piano in his living room with no one to play it. He was much too busy in his career to take traditional piano lessons – he just wanted to “doodle” after work in the evening and relax after a stress-filled day at the hospital.

Unfortunately, I told him “no – I don’t have anything like that available – sorry!” and that was the end of that story.

But a few months later another student had heard a “new age” pianist somewhere, and loved the sounds he produced so much that they wanted to do the same, and asked me how in the world he got those sounds. They weren’t really songs – more like the sounds of nature and running water and nature in bloom.

I have taught piano for 30 years and I’m a firm believer in learning to read music, understand music, and really master the keyboard. I’m no fan of mindless “shortcuts” because I know in the long run they just don’t work – you’ve got to have understanding.

But I also know now that there are many people like my doctor friend – people that would love to be able to make their own “pleasant sounds” on the piano just for their own satisfaction, relaxation, and amusement. They know full well that they will never be full-blown piano players, but still, they would like to sit down now and then and just make some sounds on the keyboard that sound good, feel good, and give satisfaction to them and/or their family.

I should have understood that earlier, because as I think back to my own youth, I recall my Dad sitting down at our old upright piano for a half-hour on a Saturday night and playing some kind of chording pattern that absolutely delighted my Mom and my big brother and I. I guess you know that if I could call him back from Heaven and have him play that again for me, I wouldn’t trade the entire London Symphony for that half-hour.

There is a style of music that is quite popular these days known as “new age” music. It tries to capture the sounds of nature – water flowing, birds, wind – that kind of thing. It is very descriptive music, and very relaxing. It’s fun to play, too, because there are really no “wrong answers” – anything that sounds nice and pleasant is “right”.

After trying for several months to create some of these sounds on the piano, I was delighted to discover that there are some very simple finger patterns that can create some wonderful impressionistic sounds – patterns that can be repeated in various places on the keyboard and in various ways.

And so for those people who just want to make some nice sounds on the piano (or keyboard or synthesizer – it doesn’t matter what kind of keyboard) I discovered some 15 different sound patterns that anyone can duplicate. I named some of them:

Cascading waterfalls

Wind in the forest

Rainbow after storm

Oriental gardens

Stroll in a meadow

Peaceful morning

Playful kittens

Gentle waves

…and 7 others.

After I discovered each sound pattern, I then linked those sound patterns together in various ways so that anyone can create their own song, their own creative improvisation that expresses the feelings they want to express.

I guess an old doctor friend who just wanted to make some pleasant sounds on his grand piano can teach and old dog piano teachers like me a few tricks after all!

What Everybody Ought To Know About Music

Playing music can be your passion but when it comes to getting into it as a business the whole approach has to be very different. You can no longer be haphazard about it. You need to plan it well and ensure that you have proper goals that you want to achieve. Here are tips of how you can start giving a business angle to your passion.

First have a vision. This might sound very fluffy, but you need to know where you want to go with your business. Your vision is the most important part of your business and it drives your strategy. Make your vision statement as specific as possible and at the same time also leave room for maneuvering; so that you can make it all encompassing. For example: Vision statement can say “To Become The Top 10 Local Music Business Brand In 2 Years” rather than “To Become The Most Well-Known Music Teacher In Town”. The second statement is self-limiting and does not allow you to exploit any other aspect of the music business like giving live performance, selling music on internet etc. As you go along, you might find a lot of opportunities in areas you might have not dreamt of when you started. At that time, you want to ensure that your vision statement is as wide as possible. This will help you to identify these opportunities and not let them pass.

Once you have your vision done, set your goals and milestones. Setting goals requires proper planning. So if your goal is to have 20 full time students at your music institute in six months, you will need to plan your marketing and advertising campaigns to make this happen. However, if you have no milestones, you will just take everyday as it comes and not approach things with the same passion and vigour as you would if you knew where you were going. Having a goal will also prevent you from going astray and will help you look for options in case something does not work.

Once you have these set, next move to the brick and mortar aspects of the business. If you have a studio, ensure that it looks professional and has all the equipments required. Whether the studio is used for teaching students or composing your own songs make sure that it is fit for purpose. Actively market your facilities to your clients. Also try other means to reach out to your audience like internet, email marketing etc.

Developing a proper marketing plan is the next most important step. Explore all the options you have of marketing your services like flyers, adverts, free performance, Internet etc. Whichever mode of marketing you choose, it is important to plan your message well. So spend time to think of your advert copy and ensure that the message is succinct and to the point.

All About Music Education

Music education consists of the study of music. It is something that is profoundly human, and sets the human race apart from other creatures. Thus, if a person has a good knowledge and understanding of this art then it is considered to be a very high level of class and culture.

A good knowledge of music and even a basic understanding of playing a few instruments could help a person over a life time. It becomes your support against sadness, failure, happiness and solitude. This is the reason why most of us are advised to learn this art while we are young. It makes us feel much more alive in our old age, when we play the instruments and recall the music that we once loved.

Music education generally starts for children in school. Some kids are also taught this art by special teachers who can visit their homes. They taught the basics of music theory. In this process, they will be taught to recognise and reproduce the basic notes on various instruments, and their acoustic sense will be developed to identify different notes.

They also taught some lessons related to its history, so that students can learn and identify the evolution of this art through the ages, and appreciate the value of innovation. They will be taught to understand how different musical geniuses developed music through their creativity and passion, and how the most ordinary instruments have evolved to be the most basic parts of a band today. They are also taught simple songs through choirs and jingles.

The later levels of this education process further extrapolate on the basics. Students are taught about how they can take their music further to broader levels. They are given extensive training in higher education. Due to the beauty of the subject, and the eminent peace it brings, many people choose to study this subject as a vocation.

You Need to Know About Music and Ringing Ear

Loud noises can pose a serious problem to your hearing health. There are a range of problems you can experience. Some of the most common include hearing loss and tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. Listening to loud music frequently will damage the nerve fibers in your inner ear. This damage can become permanent if you keep it up. Then, your inner ear will start sending false signals to the brain which is when you’ll start experiencing symptoms of tinnitus.

People who experience ringing in the ear can do so because they visit clubs frequently. The loud music at concerts, particularly bass, can also cause problems. You may also get tinnitus if you use headphones to listen to music too loudly. If you do use headphones to listen to music, they should be the ear bud variety. Listening to music with headphones that go over the ears will cause you to turn the volume up even louder to hear it. This is due to the fact that it needs to cancel out any background noise you’re around.

There are also special noise-canceling headphones that you can wear. They generate signals that help cancel out noise before they reach your ears. However, even while wearing these headphones, you still shouldn’t listen to the music too loudly. If you frequently go to concerts, you should seriously consider wearing ear plugs. You may experience temporary ringing in your ears just after you leave the concert. This may go away overnight or after a few days. However, the damage can become permanent over time and you’ll experience real problems.

There are also musician’s earplugs that you can use. They’re very expensive, so you should only invest in them if you’re actually a musician. They help decrease outside sounds while still producing the tones that are vital to music. If you’ve already damaged your ears and experience frequent tinnitus, there are a few things you can try. Firstly, you should avoid all loud noises. You’ll also need to limit your stress and eat healthy foods. These methods seem to help people with the condition.

Listening to music too loudly will cause you plenty of problems in the future. It’s best that you wear headphones turned down to an appropriate level. If you frequently go to concerts, then you definitely need to wear ear plugs. Ear plugs are also useful to wear in the club, but this is typically not done for fashion reasons.

Things I Love About Music

This is just an article about why love music, and what I feel music does for me. I particularly like playing music, whether it is on my piano or my guitar, I just love to make music.

1) The Way the instrument feels. When I pick it up or sit at it, I love that it is silent, and only when I press or strum, does that beautiful creation begin to purr. Playing an instrument is one of the best things that anybody can ever learn to do, and holding the instrument is the first part of learning, so it will always be the most special.

2) The music I play. When you look at the wide range of music that is on offer today, and you can see all the musical influences and the range of different styles and genres it is impossible to find something that you won’t love. I like to play a bit of everything. On my Roland Piano, I like to play classical, jazz and sometimes rock. On my Electric Guitar, I like to play metal and I sometimes even play my banjo when I want to put a twist on a song.

3) Roland Pianos. ‘Nuff Sed

4) They way instruments smell. My Roland piano absolutely stinks of wood and passion! I bought it new and have since taken excellent car of it, with nary a scratch or smudge on it at all.

5) Music reminds you of people. When I sit at my piano and play, I am sometimes overcome with images and thoughts of people close to me and those that I have met previously and it reminds me of good times I have had in the past, this is one of the main reasons I play my instruments so often.

6) Music is a universal language. I have been abroad and listened to different types of music from people whose language I cannot understand. I have no idea what they are saying, but somehow their music stills speaks to me and I feel as if somehow and on some level I have connected with them.

7) Music can be used as an ice breaker. In my younger years, when I went with my friends, we went to rock and roll bars and tried to chat up the ladies. We then discovered we were hopeless at this. Using the music as a way to bridge the gap between us made communicating so much easier and in some cases redundant, as we would just enjoy the music together and not worry about talking.

8) Playing my Roland piano. When I am feeling down or bored or just fancy a quick play, I pull out my sheet music, sit to the piano and just go with it. When I play I just feel separate from everything else that I happening around me. I just love to play my music and whenever we have people in the house, I like to get them round the piano and just have a jam. It’s one of the staples of my life.

9) Snacking for the soul. When I play my Roland piano, I feel somehow fuller and richer for the experience. I can’t guarantee the same effects for anyone else, but I certainly feel inspired and nourished.

10) UNITY. The most important thing is unity. When I play people tap their feet. Music unites people both consciously and subconsciously. When we listen to or play music, we are together.

I hope this has been of some use or benefit to you. I love music and I hope you all do to, if I have helped you in understand some of the reasons as to why many others have found a bond with music then that is gratification enough.

The Most Crucial Points You Should Know About Music

It never ceases to shock me the number of people are in complete ignorance of precisely what music copyright is about, and how high-risk it could be to ignore the guidelines associated with it. Music licensing is, in simple terms at least, the authorized use of any kind of tracks that holds a legitimate copyright over it.

So why do we’ve got music licensing at all? Well the true reason for it is because musicians and lyricists should have a powerful layer of protection encompassing his or her works, otherwise they would not produce it to begin with. If you made an outstanding masterpiece, you’d probably need some form of defense against individuals stealing it or declaring it is his or her own creation. This particular defense is generated by the various audio licensing methods, and the legislations facilitates them therefore you can take someone to the courtroom for breaching your own copyright entitlement.

For instance, Philips just recently released an aggressive marketing strategy. The campaign carries a reputable Beatles tune as its theme music. It’s been stated that Philips actually paid out a whopping one million bucks for the legal rights to make use of this track within their marketing plan. That really goes to show the power of audio licensing inside the corporate arena. Most people also are not able to fully understand the wide extent of audio copyright in the United States. As an example, many individuals do not know how the tracks performed for radio stations, in TV ads, in podcasts, in motion pictures and even in bars will be strongly licensed.

To gain a very clear knowledge of just how far current US and other world music copyright schemes go in locking down the interests of music providers, here are a few important principles to take into account:

The law allows you to possess rights to particular sounds, verse and notes in a music. The legal rights to any of these elements or even all of them will be your own if they’re unique and you are the original composer. You must also be aware of the point that being the inventor merely offers you the right to the tunes however for these legal rights to be enforceable inside a court of justice you’ll have to sign-up in your local copyright clinic, a thing that many performers omit to do.

Licensing regulations have a totally different process on the subject of commercialized tracks. In this case, it is an actual song not its sounds, lyrics or notes which are under examination at the certification phase. There’s a few concerned parties with regards to these kinds of songs. The individuals concerned include the record label, the artist, the musician and the song author.

The record label would own the rights for the song’s actual sound recording, the composer and verse writer will possess the legal rights for the song, the publisher will legally represent the composer and songwriter in all their business affairs which the piece of music concerns.

That is the basic set up in relation to a commercial melody. Then again, slight variations may very well take place in any given record labelling company based on the details of the legal agreements it has got with its vocalists and songwriters. Additionally, other licensing styles are available whereby companies can buy the rights to Royalty Free music, enabling them to use the music in relative peace of mind without any “needle-drop” fees. It is important to remember that royalty free and copyright free music are two very different things entirely. Copyright free music has no rights whatsoever as they are relinquished by the artist upon a track’s creation or composition.

Radio channels and bars that want to use tunes are required to get hold of public performance privileges from appropriate authorities. In North America those relevant bodies are the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and the Broadcast Music Incorporated organisation.

These organizations issue out blanket certificates to diners and broadcast channels to use just about any audio that they desire. The proceeds provided by those payments are then divided moving upward amongst the music rights proprietors in the country.

It goes without saying that broadcasters and production firms must be very careful whenever selecting tracks for film or community presentations. Podcasts are certainly one area where many individuals have made a commercial mistake by simply neglecting to perform some general checks on the law and how it pertains to the use of particular music arrangements.

How Do You Encourage Your Children About Music

So why is it important that you encourage your kids to play a musical instrument? Because it will develop in your child new skills that will bring a true sense of enjoyment and accomplishment as they mature into adults.

Obviously this is not an easy task because it means they must be dedicated to a daily repetition of practice, and to be away from their friends and “fun”. But perseverance on your part (and theirs) will pay off in the long run, and your child will understand and thank you for your wisdom, as their musical skill grows and becomes more enjoyable instead of a laboring task.

It’s true not all children are born with a talent for music, like some of the great musicians in history, but like other important achievements, it requires consistent and repetitious work to develop a talent for music.

An important introduction at first must come from encouragement by the parents, until it becomes a part of their everyday life, and the enjoyment and fun of achieving the ability to play an instrument becomes evident.

As they grow older and more proficient in music, they will make friends with other young musicians and bond with those of similar interests, and hopefully join with them to create entertaining band music together – independently or in a school band.

So, it is most often a combination of encouragement and discipline from the parent for a child to get into a musical interest, until they see the fun they can have with their musical talent. What kind of instrument? That may be to some degree, your child’s decision to select an instrument that most appeals to them.

If the parents are not musically inclined, then a teacher must be available to teach the basic skills needed and to establish a goal and reason to practice on a regular basis, with the “deadline” being the weekly music lesson.
